[Abstract]
The Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties represent a crucial historical stage in which interethnic contact, communication, and integration in China deepened and gradually took shape. During this period, sports activities functioned not merely as social practices of the body, but also as a historical area for emotional interaction, cultural identity formation, and social order construction. Drawing on historical documents and logical induction, this study systematically examines the formation logic and cultural effects of the“three interactions”(san jiao)of sports during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods. The research finds that the sports“three interactions” were a historical necessity arising from the interplay between institutional guidance and cultural dynamics within a multiethnic governance framework. Sports activities across various domains— military drills, court ceremony, urban entertainment, and frontier festivals— formed a bidirectional interactive mechanism between top-down regulation and bottom-up participation. Within the dual processes of ritualization and popularization, sports facilitated the social translation and cultural regeneration of physical skills, revealing remarkable inclusiveness and adaptability. The sports“three interactions” effectively blurred ethnic boundaries and, through their everyday living forms, deepened cultural identity within the shared community. This historical experience illustrates the integrative logic of Chinese civilization—“communicating emotions through skill, cultivating customs with ritual, and unifying the community via music”— and reveals how the Yuan–Ming–Qing societies achieved coexistence and cultural synthesis through the fusion of skill, ritual and music. It not only offers important historical insight into the multiethnic unity of Chinese civilization, but also provides valuable inspiration for the construction of contemporary sports culture and the cultivation of social cohesion in a multiethnic nation.
